At St. Peter's all aspects of English are essential to our children's learning.
Reading: We have a well-equipped library, which has been digitally upgraded to use Accelerated Reader to support the appropriacy of book choices for the children, and provide challenges for the children to complete. Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading management and monitoring programme that aims to foster independent reading. The internet-based software assesses reading age, and suggests books that match pupils’ needs and interests. Pupils take computerised quizzes on the books and earn AR points as they progress.
Speaking and Listening: All children have opportunities for speaking and listening in the classroom, in all lessons; in class assemblies; church services; and end of term plays.
Writing: Writing is taught to a high standard with quality resources. There is a high expectation of presentation in all subjects. All writing is completed in one book so that children can continue to work on their targets in all subjects. Teachers scaffold and model when necessary; and the working wall provides extra support for independent learning.
Interventions: We have access to Read Write Inc, Talk Boost, Letters and Sounds and Sound Discovery to support children who need a boost, these are delivered at a high standard by well-trained teaching assistants.
